Recently I got in trouble with my ISP because of using torrents and downloading “stuff” that they say, I should not be downloading. After I manage to fix the problem and got my internet service back, I decided to never be in that situation again. I just see this as a attack on my privacy.
So the idea is to block IP addreses that may be monitoring what I do. After some searching I manage to found a list of IPS to block. You can download this list from here.
Now how to enable it in UTorrent. ![]()
1)First rename the nipfilter.dat file to ipfilter.dat file
2)Move the ipfilter.dat file to the UTorrent Application data folder. The application data folder will be located in some path similar to this one C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\uTorrent
Notice that my administrator user may be not the user you are using, so the path will be something like C:\Documents and Settings\YOURUSER\Application Data\uTorrent
3) Set the IPFilter option to true in UTorrent

Also you can do this with Peer Guardian 2 ![]()
1)First download Peer Guardian 2 here
2) Rename the ipfilter.dat file to ipfilter.p2p
3)Add the list to Peer Guardian 2. To do this, click on the “List Manager” Button of Peer guardian
Then Click the Add button

Select the ipfilter.p2p file

Click the Ok button, after the cache is done, you should have 2 lists

This is just for precaution, because peer guardian has a pretty good list anyways.
This will hopefully block all the IP Addresses that may get their nouses where they don’t belong.

We I go looking for the path that you mentioned so I can put the file there, I don’t see it listed at all. I can’t find it. WOuld you know why it’s no where to be found ?
When I try and find the path that you mentioned I don’t see it on my computer. Would you know why ?
Hi Mike, yeah, you probably are not able to see hidden folders. Just go to file explorer, tools, folder options, view, and select show hidden files and folders. Now you should be able to see it.
Thanks for this pix! I also was contacted recently by my ISP about a certain download. Strange thing was that I had PeerGuardian running (or so I thought) during that time but my goodie goodie ISP still sent me a notice. I hope this list will do me some good. Thanks again.
Sure thing! Read the other post about upgrading the list automatically. Its pretty cool!

Answer: To view this folder you have to
on top click Tools > Folder Options>view Tab>Hidden Files and Folders>Check Show Hidden Files and Folders.
Thats it. Now put ipfilter.dat into that folder.
Ok Yes, This is an easiest way.
Click, Start, Run, and type %AppData%
This will open the folder for you.
Let me know if it work
PiX!
hey, can you post a link to the other post
‘Read the other post about upgrading the list automatically. Its pretty cool!’

thanks
Here it is

Thanks for this tutorial,
just got top speed on UTorrent (even after using a VPN my isp is throttling me to death)
This path doesn’t exist in Vista:
C:\Documents and Settings\YOURUSER\Application Data\uTorrent
But this path does
C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\uTorrent\
Would placing the file in this folder also work? Still a noob. Thanx.
Yes same path. Vista just have “fancy” user security…yeah right.
%appdata%/utorrent/ will get to it easily.
So basically this is all I need to do in order to block IP’s for uTorrent? Because I though that uTorrent had an IP Protocal encryption system going on which was located within u torrents Preferences. Also, I have another question, is there any way in which you can check to see if the bittorent ipfilter.dat file is functioning?
Also, do my understanding. The ipfilter.dat file no longer updates daily, and now you must download the file seperately if you want to be as up to date as possible….
If you are not in windows vista then I recommend you use peer guarding, that will be the safest, easiest solution.
Last time I check PG2 did not work on vista.
Even if you are using encryption most ISP will catch if you are not monitoring and blocking IPs.
Read the rest of the post on how to update and block the list in the ipfilder.dat
But again if you have the option of running pear guardian, there is no need of adding ipfilder.dat.
Pear guardian list is pretty good, and also you can add custom list if you are not satisfied.
Also Pear guarding will update the list automatically daily, so that’s another thing you can check of the list.
what about if you have a MAC? how do i do all that stuff then?
I am not a MAC user, so I cant be really helpfull. I Think UTorrent recently got ported to MAC. So the same principle apply, you just need to search the equivalent to %appdata% on Mac
PG now works with Vista…It is a Beta though…
